Puerto Rico 1897 is a strategy and resource management board game designed for 2 to 5 players. Participants compete to develop plantations, manage goods, and build infrastructure to accumulate prestige and wealth. Each turn involves choosing a role and executing actions such as producing, trading, or developing the city, where only the player who selects the role gains special advantages, although the rest benefit partially.
The role selection mechanic creates an interactive and competitive dynamic, requiring players to anticipate their rivals' moves. The goal is to optimize resources, acquire workers, and sell products to earn victory points.
